SCDT presents HUT XLIII and KAREN NELSON- Saturday November 9th at 33 Hawley Workroom Theater

FALLING small, big and shared:
Experiential Learning through Contact Improvisation and Tuning Scores
Facilitated by Karen Nelson

Saturday November 9
10-1pm
in The Workroom, 33 Hawley St. Northampton, MA

This workshop will warm-up with the “small dance” of our senses (Steve Paxton, Contact Improvisation), explore survival patterns, common sense and compositional choice to reveal wonders of dancing in a dancing world. Enhancing awareness of touch by inhibiting vision in one score (Tuning Scores, Lisa Nelson), we will learn falling movements from each other with eyes closed. Devising playful actions and communicating choices within “made up” pressures to “get it right” will challenge personal and cultural habits to unravel. The resulting experiment engages innate dancing skills and exposes innocent, beautiful, and creative abilities— superpowers to unravel presumptions of knowing— and embody the present with openness.  REGISTER HERE!

It is co-curated by movement artist Jennifer Polins, writer Jay Keery Weingarten and sound artist Jake Meginsky. The series showcases the work of three artists in each performance, featuring MOVEMENT, WORDS, and MUSIC from local and international artists who share a pursuit of experimental improvisation and an intention to push their forms forward. HUT draws diverse audiences who love music, writing and dance, offering varied communities a chance to sit together and experience performance styles they might not have appreciated before.  By juxtaposing different artistic genres and emphasizing experimentation, HUT creates a unique space for building a new sense of public engagement and appreciation for the arts.
